Our Favourite UK Fibromyalgia Support Groups

Living with fibromyalgia presents considerable challenges, from widespread pain to profound fatigue. Finding a supportive community can be transformative, offering a space to share experiences and discover coping strategies. At Tiggo Care, we understand the value of support and provide personalised, compassionate home care and live-in care services for people with fibromyalgia allowing for a comfortable lifestyle at home. Here, we highlight four outstanding UK fibromyalgia support groups that could make a significant difference for you or your loved one and afterwards provide a comprehensive list of all support groups in the UK.

Fibromyalgia Action UK (FMA UK)

Fibromyalgia Action UK (FMA UK) was founded in 1992 and merged with Fibroaction in 2015. This group is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by fibromyalgia across the UK. It is staffed primarily by compassionate volunteers, many of whom have fibromyalgia themselves. FMA UK provides extensive support and information to individuals and their families.

The charity oversees a network of over 150 support groups facilitated by regional coordinators, promoting empathy and support. FMA UK offers crucial services, including national helplines, an online support forum, free patient information packs, and booklets for medical professionals. It engages in research advocacy and international collaborations via the European Network of Fibromyalgia Associations (ENFA).

Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Groupi

The Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group serves as a vital support hub for those with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and fibromyalgia in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. This charity provides advice and social care advocacy, as well as facilitating in-person and online peer support, ensuring accessibility for all members.

Their vibrant community has an active Facebook group with over 1,000 members and a private forum for tailored support. The organisation hosts free social and well-being activities, ranging from arts and crafts to mindfulness and warm water swimming. They also engage in outreach, setting up information stalls and partnering with local organisations to raise awareness about these conditions.

For more information or to join the community, contact the Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group at 0114 2536700 or via email at info@sheffieldmegroup.co.uk.

West Lothian Fibromyalgia Support Group

West Lothian Fibromyalgia Support Group, registered on 27 April 2003, is an essential charity and community for those impacted by fibromyalgia in West Lothian, Scotland. It focuses on improving the quality of life of those with fibromyalgia through education, awareness, and direct support, targeting both sufferers and the broader community.

Initiatives include educational outreach, a resource lending library, and social events like Christmas lunches, cruise trips, and craft activities to foster a supportive community atmosphere. Additionally, the FM support group organises awareness-raising events and offers a sociable forum for individuals to share experiences and advice. For more information, email secretarywlfibro@gmail.com or contact Alison at 07931355495.

Coventry Fibromyalgia Support Group

Established in 2007 by Janet Farr, the Coventry Fibromyalgia Support Group offers vital support for people with fibromyalgia. Diagnosed at 68, Janet recognised the need for ongoing support after her hospital treatments ended and initiated this group to help people self-manage their chronic conditions.

The group meets monthly at St John's The Baptist, Coventry, offering structured and casual activities to foster well-being. Meetings often feature talks by healthcare professionals and encourage sharing of experiences and strategies. This UK fibromyalgia group also engages in awareness and fundraising efforts, including annual events to support broader causes like MacMillan. For more information, contact them at covfibro@gmail.com or call 07951 406 214.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any fibromyalgia support groups in the UK?

Yes, there are numerous fibromyalgia support groups in the UK and globally. These groups offer a supportive community where individuals can share experiences, access resources, and receive emotional support. Examples include Fibromyalgia Action UK and the Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group, both dedicated to helping those affected by fibromyalgia.

What should you not do if you have fibromyalgia?

If you have fibromyalgia, avoid activities that worsen symptoms. Overexertion can cause widespread pain and fatigue. Ignoring the need for rest disrupts fatigue management. Excessive caffeine and sugar can interfere with sleep. Stress can trigger and worsen symptoms. Listen to your body and prioritise self-care to manage fibromyalgia effectively.

What are the four stages of fibromyalgia?

Early symptoms involve widespread pain and fatigue without a clear diagnosis. Second, progressive worsening brings constant symptoms, intensified pain, and "fibro fog." Third, management and stability allow symptom control via treatment and lifestyle changes. Lastly, severe impact affects daily life, and intensive management and support are needed.

Can you live a normal life with fibromyalgia?

Yes, many people with fibromyalgia can live fulfilling lives. While the condition presents challenges, medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, and support networks enhance the quality of life. Tailored treatment plans with healthcare providers are crucial. Family, friends, and support groups offer valuable support in managing the condition.
