What is COPD?

COPD is a group of lung conditions that make breathing more difficult. The NHS estimates that 1 in 8 emergency hospital admissions result from COPD.

The most common types of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Each has its own symptoms and causes, but most cases of COPD are caused by smoking. Other causes are long-term exposure to specific types of dust and chemicals. There is no cure for COPD but there are treatments to relieve symptoms and improve a person’s quality of life.

The most common symptoms associated with COPD are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • A cough that doesn’t go away
  • Regular chest infections
  • Weight loss

It’s important that people who suspect they have COPD seek a diagnosis from a medical professional so they can receive treatment to slow the progression of the disease.

A Day In The Life With Anaf

"One of my favourite things about my job is the conversations I have with my clients. They all have interesting lives and I love to hear their stories. Sometimes we go out for a coffee or for a walk in the local park and sometimes we stay at home and chat.”

The Benefits of COPD Home Care

Our care assistants know it is important for people with COPD to adhere to their medication routine, particularly medications administered with an inhaler. They will work with you to make sure your medication is taken correctly to prevent flare-ups and unnecessary hospital admissions.

We also understand that it can be difficult for people with COPD to complete certain tasks due to their shortness of breath. Our care assistants can help with day-to-day housekeeping, cooking and cleaning to ensure you don’t exacerbate your symptoms. We’ll create a bespoke care plan with you that outlines the support you want from your care assistant so you can live independently.

More reasons to choose Tiggo Care

Our Care packages are bespoke

At Tiggo Care we understand how precious your loved one is to you and how unique they are. We also appreciate how overwhelming it can be to research and source the most suitable type of care.

We fundamentally believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ care package and like to work with you and your loved one to understand your specific requirements. We’ll then create a tailored care package and match your relative with their ideal carer.

We're fully regulated

Unlike some other care providers, we are fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission. This means we are regularly inspected, rated and audited to ensure we are a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led organisation, committed to delivering the best possible care.

We’re also proud members of the Homecare Association, the U.K’s membership body for home care providers, which holds organisations to a high set of standards and requests them to abide by a strict code of practice

Our carers are fully vetted & trained

At Tiggo Care, all of our carers undergo a rigorous recruitment and induction process. They are fully vetted and background checked, with all references followed up. Our carers undertake their training on the best eLearning system currently available within the UK care market, ensuring they are well placed to deliver the best possible service. Specialist training courses such as moving and handling, medications and basic life support are also completed by our carers face to face, as we feel these courses are more effective when delivered in person.

Yes, our care assistants can support people on oxygen therapy but they cannot maintain the equipment. Our team can help clients organise appropriate maintenance visits for their oxygen equipment.

Can people with COPD live alone?

People with COPD who live with a family member, friend or live-in care assistant generally have better health outcomes but it is perfectly possible for a person with COPD to live alone with the right support.

What can I do to make living at home with COPD easier?

The most effective way of making living at home with COPD easier is to stop smoking. Other effective activities include light exercise, special breathing techniques, and eating a balanced diet.
